Bmobile
Francistown Marathon
Bmobile
marathon was held at Francistown city. More than 1000 participants took part on
this event, it attracted local and foreign athletes. This event is categorized as
hall mark event. According Bowdin et al, (2012) hall mark events refer to those
events held by towns, city or region to identify their spirit or ethos to increase
widespread recognition and awareness. The organizers of this event (Bmobile and
other stake holders) intended to create an awareness and recognition of Francistown
city to investors and to tourists.
The writer took part as a volunteer (field marshal)
at the event. Bowdin et al, (2012) says
that volunteers should be motivated by the event manager, to enable them to achieve
corporate goals or their own. Without a proper motivation can lead volunteers
to lack enthusiasm (Mullins, 2005). The volunteers were not appropriately motivated
at this event, which caused no show up of some volunteers. Volunteers who
showed up during the event also didn’t deliver quality service due to lack of
motivation from the organizers.
Lynch,
(2009) point out short term volunteers can be motivated by appreciation of
their personal achievement, which can be done simply by express thanks them for
their involvement.
